ATA Truck Tonnage Index Fell 2.3% in May

ARLINGTON, Va., -- The American Trucking Associations' advance seasonally adjusted (SA) For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index decreased 2.3% in May after decreasing a revised 0.6% in April 2011. April's drop was slightly less than the 0.7% ATA reported on May 25, 2011.  The latest drop put the SA index at 112.3 (2000=100) in May, down from the April level of 114.9.

The not seasonally adjusted index, which represents the change in tonnage actually hauled by the fleets before any seasonal adjustment, equaled 115.9 in May, which was 2% above the previous month.  

Compared with May 2010, SA tonnage climbed 2.7%, although this was the smallest year-over-year gain since February 2010.  In April, the tonnage index was 4.8% above a year earlier.

"Truck tonnage over the last four months shows that the economy definitely hit a soft patch this spring," ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello said. "With our index falling in three of the last four months totaling 3.7%, it is clear why there is some renewed anxiety over the economic recovery."

However, Costello added that he is cautiously optimistic that freight volumes will improve in the second half of the year along with economic activity.

"With oil prices falling and some of the Japan-related auto supply problems ending, I believe this was a soft patch and not a slide back into recession, and we should see better, but not great, economic activity in the months ahead," he said.

Prime Inc Announces Qualcomm Text Messaging System

Springfield, Mo. – Prime inc. recently announced a new feature for any driver assigned to a truck operating under Prime’s authority. This new feature allows drivers to choose to have their Qualcomm messages delivered directly to their cell phones as text messages.

“At Prime, we’re constantly looking for ways to make information easier to access for our drivers,” said John Hancock, Prime inc. director of training and driver recruiting. “The Qualcomm text messaging system allows drivers to have crucial information literally at their fingertips.”

Although the messages will still be sent to the drivers’ Qualcomm units as usual, the new feature will allow drivers to receive on-the-job important information in a more accessible way than ever before. Once a driver activates the feature, text messages will be sent to the phone only when the truck is not moving. This safety feature complies with DOT regulations of not texting while driving

Anderson Trucking Service's Innovative Lease Program To Pay $1 Million In Bonuses To Contractors

St. Cloud, MN - Anderson Trucking Service, Inc. (ATS) has announced that for the first time, they are on track to pay out one million dollars in completion bonuses to drivers who have successfully completed a one-year lease with the Minnesota-based trucking company. 

Since inception more than 1,400 drivers have made the transition from company driver to independent contractor by taking part in a 12-month lease with ATS. Upon completing their lease, each driver receives a cash bonus of $3,200 that may be used however the driver desires.  Many drivers choose to use the money as a down payment to purchase the truck they've been driving, or as a down payment on a brand new truck. Others decide to keep the cash bonus and begin another 12-month lease. ATS has drivers who are now entering into their tenth one-year lease--racking up $32,000 in completion bonuses so far. 

ATS explains that the year-long lease is designed as a way of helping drivers first test out being a contractor before making a multi-year commitment to buy a tractor. 

It also gives drivers a head start by requiring no fixed expenses for the first two weeks of operation. The equipment available for lease includes pre-certified 2005 or newer Freightliner, Volvo, International and Peterbilt tractors.

Prime inc. recognizes million mile achievements

Springfield, Mo. – Prime recently recognized 17 of its drivers for reaching one million or two million miles of safe driving for the company during March, April and May.

“Recognizing our driving associates who reach a million miles or more without a preventable accident is a real honor for us,” said Don Lacy, Prime inc. director of safety. “This milestone takes a lot of hard work, attention to detail and a high level of professionalism on the road and it certainly isn’t easy to reach.”

Driving two million safe miles were Paula J. Lyke and Juan J. Guerra.  For this achievement, Lyke and Guerra each received a custom-fitted lambskin leather jacket, a lapel pin and certificate.

Drivers who reached a million miles and have been at Prime for seven years with no preventable accidents reached the Gold Million level. They were: Donald A. Fields, Michael W. Gandee, Darrin Lee Jackson, Phillip A. Matchett, Charity E. Thomas, John J. Penders, Victor L. Blackburn, Juan Guerra Jr., Mark C. Kidwell, Mark E. Oldham, Dillip Ramnanan, Peter J. Sampson, David A. Williams, Matthew E. Allen, Bonny J. Fisher, Howard F. Smith and Jerald R. Thomas. The Silver Million level was awarded to drivers with three consecutive years at Prime having no preventable accidents plus four years with a previous carrier with no preventable accidents. They were: Angelo R. Maio, Thomas L. Carroll, Jerry Haecker, Charles A. Lane and Janice M. Olsen.

For passing the one million mile mark, the drivers were given an engraved plaque and watch, a certificate and a lapel pin.  Plaques bearing the names of all of these individuals will also hang in Prime’s Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mo.
