Boyd Bros. Claims 3 of the 4 Top Honors at SMMC Awards

Boyd_bros_winners
Clayton, AL –Monday, March 26, 2007 was a proud day for Boyd Bros. Transportation. Three of the top four awards presented by the Alabama Trucking Association’s Safety & Maintenance Management Council (SMMC) Fleet Safety Awards went to Boyd Bros. employees. Maintenance Professional of the Year went to David Baker, Fleet Manager of the Year was awarded to Kevin Spivey and Nathaniel Blue was named the Alabama Trucking Association's Driver of the Year.
The Fleet Safety Awards, sponsored by ATA’s Safety and Maintenance Management Council, are given annually to recognize companies, managers and drivers who uphold the highest safety standards in the state. Safety records are determined by calculating the number of accidents per million miles driven within the state for the previous year. Individual awards are given based on safety and/or maintenance performance.

Nathaniel Blue, ATA’s Driver of the Year, was the clear winner of this award, edging dozens of other drivers by recently reaching 4-million miles without an accident. This is a milestone that very few people in this industry achieve, and even more impressive, is that Blue accrued all of these miles with one company. Boyd Bros.

Blue said that when he was hired by Boyd Bros. founder Dempsey Boyd back in 1979, he promised his new boss to always strive to be the best and safest driver on the road. And now, after 29 ½ years, he’s more than lived up to his promise, becoming Boyd Bros. first 4-million mile safe driver and their first Alabama Driver of the Year.

Dave Baker, Maintenance Professional of the Year, has spent the last 26 years in this field. As Vice- President of Maintenance for Boyd Bros. for over 15 years, he has been active in the American Trucking Associations Technology and Maintenance Council and the ATA’s Technical Advisory Group. Among his many was the installation and retrofitting of auxiliary power units on the Boyd Bros. fleet that resulted in a one-half mile per gallon fuel savings. In addition to that phenomenal savings, Dave implemented a nearly paperless shop operation, which has improved productivity, developed and tested various retread materials and treads patterns in association with Bandag Tire Company, and introduced a program that included continuous personal and technical training for shop associates. Dave has significantly reduced overall maintenance costs at Boyd Bros. in 2006.

Kevin Spivey, ATA’s Fleet Manager of the Year, has been with Boyd Bros. for over 18 years. He has a marketing degree from Troy State University and a lot of trucking experience, which allows him to serve as a mentor to junior fleet managers. Kevin’s management style, dedication, execution, and overall concern that his drivers make a good living and get home regularly, makes him a magnet for drivers. He consistently ranks in the top three among his peers at Boyd Bros. in weekly revenue, safety, and driver turnover. In fact, his fleet contains 12 drivers that have recorded at least one million miles without a chargeable accident, and four drivers with at least 2 million miles without a chargeable accident. He and his wife Lana have 3 children and they reside in Clayton, Al.

Boyd Bros. Transportation is very proud of Nathaniel Blue, Kevin Spivey and Dave Baker. “The company is honored to have such conscientious, safe and dedicated employees on board with us, we value them as employees, and even more so as members of the Boyd Bros. Family.” said Chris Cooper, Boyd Bros. CEO and third- generation transportation employee.

Boyd Bros. Transportation Inc., headquartered in Clayton, Alabama, is America’s leading flatbed truckload carrier, specializing in time-sensitive transportation of iron and steel products, lumber, roofing, and other valuable building commodities throughout the eastern two-thirds of the United States.
